At the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Offenbach am Main a professorship (BesGr W2 HBesG) in the field of Digital Design will become available for the winter semester 2020, initially for a period of six years. The HfG is a University of Art and Design in the State of Hesse, Germany with accreditation to award doctoral degrees. 

Job Description

The new discipline of Digital Design is to be established as a teaching and research field within the School of Design, as both a new discipline  in its own right and as part of an  interdisciplinary theme  within the school.

The world of today and tomorrow is shaped by linked analog and digital processes. Design is responsible for the task of enabling people to freely, safely, with equality and with self-determination  allowing people to deal with  technological systems in a meaningful way. In addition to  studying the interdependence of social-technology and its context, ecological influences, and critical analysis,   digital design students are involved with learning digital design methods and strategies, as well as with the design, construction and design by example of virtual networked, intelligent products, processes and spaces.

The Professorship of Digital Design will offer basic modules, advanced modules and research modules as project work in the future Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the Design Department. The teaching includes design methods, strategy and development processes, digital technologies and techniques (e.g. coding) as well as experimental development and research into future systems. Students should acquire an individual and professional capacity for action for the meaning and effect of design in digital contexts.

The position is an integral part of a holistic didactic and research strategy in the Department of Design: Students can choose from the following subjects: Digital Design, Industrial Design, Information Design, Integrated Design, Material Design, Cultural Theory and Aesthetics, Design Theory and History as well as Brand Design, Interaction Design, Curating Design and Intercultural Projects.

Qualifications

A completed university degree in design is a prerequisite for employment. Relevant experience both in design practice and in research and teaching in the field of digital design with proven competence in 2D, 3D and 4D media systems is expected. We are looking for a committed person with special aptitude, openness and motivation for research and collaborative development of design-scientific findings. Didactic and pronounced pedagogical skills as well as a high level of social competence are considered just as indispensable as the willingness to work in committees and to supervise work in the doctoral program.

The employment requirements of §§ 61 and 62 Hessian Higher Education Act apply. The full-time position has a teaching load of 18 SWS in accordance with §3, section 3 LVVO (Hessen). The appointment is initially limited to six years. A later conversion into a professorship for life is possible.
