Abstract

This contribution explores the ambivalences of the garden as a figure of thought, figuration, and in practice-oriented, artistic approaches. Following Haraway’s call to act as “mad gar-deners” (2016: 57) in the Anthropocene, we address the colonial histories and extractive logics tied to gardening. By examining projects in art, activism, and technology, we aim to invent alterna-tive narratives and practices for collective survival on a damaged planet. We engage with tensions between techno-scientific enthusi-asm and techno-aesthetic sensitivities, neo-colonial conquest and queer-ecological care, extra-terra-enhancement and terrapolis, and toxic vs. fertile soils, while arguing for a material practice of gardening as a careful and attentive folding and unfolding, com-posting, plowing through, and traversing the past and the future.
