Prof. Lara Almarcegui has focused her artistic practice on exploring the material aspects of land, architecture and urban spaces. For more than thirty years – a period marked by far-reaching urban regeneration in Europe – she has been identifying abandoned sites and investigating the contemporary processes of transformation brought about by social and economic changes. Almarcegui has created guided tours of brownfield sites in the cities where she has worked, and has on occasion even initiated legal measures to protect them. She has undertaken commissions for numerous international biennales and represented Spain at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013). She is represented by the galleries Ellen de Bruijne Projects in Amsterdam, Mor Charpentier in Paris and Carreras Mújica in Bilbao. From 2015, Lara Almarcegui taught at De Ateliers, the post-academic art institute in Amsterdam. She was a semester tutor on the Master’s programme in Critical Contextual Design at the Elisava School of Design and Engineering, University of Barcelona (2024), and on the Master’s programme in Critical Spatial Practice at MaHKU in Utrecht (2013–2017).

From April 2026, she was a visiting professor at the HfG Offenbach, before taking up the Chair of Spatial Concepts in October 2026.
