The German artist and HfG-graduate Elias Wessel (* born in Bonn 1978) is based in New York and uses medium and large format cameras to create abstract photographs. Elias received his degree in Fine Art Photography and Theory of Perception from the University of Art and Design in Offenbach am Main in cooperation with the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main.

The foundation of his artistic work is based on painting. With past projects in the United States and Germany as well as in Syria, Egypt, Greece, China, Korea, Taiwan and Russia, he has solidified his career as an artist whose work includes a variety of themes and concepts. His aesthetic includes a variety of narrative, formal and conceptual approaches, which lead to the final image and its meaning. His use of technical possibilities and theoretical aspects of photography result in images that are reminiscent of paintings thus furthering the contemporary conversation between photography and painting.

He will speak about his work in a discussion with Nina Tabassomi.

Nina Tabassomi is a theater scholar and curator. Since January 2016 she has designed the exhibition program as the curator for Ludlow 38, the exhibition space of the Goethe Institut in New York. Before that, she was responsible for the exhibitions in the Tower of the Fridericianum in Kassel and is the designated director of the Galerie in the Taxispalais in Innsbruck (beginning January 2017).
